Diving Lake Erie: Bathymetry, Geology, Shipwrecks, and Environmental Concerns In-Person

Lake Erie is a dynamic, fascinating body of water that many people do not fully appreciate. This talk by Kevin Magee describes Lake Erie from a diver’s perspective and features a view of the things normally hidden by its waters. This includes its bottom, which was created by glacial action yet has a surprisingly diverse set of bathymetric features. The talk also includes some of the historic shipwrecks that now rest on the bottom of the lake. In recent years there has been an environmental threat to Lake Erie in the form of algae blooms, which have increasingly affected its water quality despite previous years of improvement. There is also now the potential for the lake to become a major source of wind energy through the placement of wind turbines offshore, which some find threatening and others find hopeful as a source of “green” energy.
